Martin Schick
I'm an independent artist, cultural manager and activist, born in Switzerland, living in empty homes of other people. Educated as a performance artist at the Highschool of Arts in Berne, I work since 2007 on scenic plays and spatial projects within the field of independent dance and performance. While treating the arts as a place of permanent transformation and a potential engine of social change, my practice is always driven by an activist position within a specific context.
The list of venues where I was presenting and developing my works is endless, reaching from Theaterspektakel Zürich to Kiasma Helsinki to Fringe Festival Beijing. Currently I am still on tour with: ‚Nature Politics’ (Schick/ Winkel/ Nature), HALFBREADTECHNIQUE (Solo work) and SOLUTIONS (in cooperation with Yan Duyvendak a.o.).
After 10 years of international touring I decided to produce, to tour and to fly less. Since March 2018 I dedicate myself to a more local context as a cultural manager for an innovation district that unifies economics/ ecology and culture (social & artistic). The work in service of a city culture, the citizens and an ambitious innovation hub allows to act beyond my one's own career design, being activist on a political level without loosing an artistic posture. The building of new (fantastic) institutions has become my main focus.
