Jenny Marketou
Jenny Marketou interdisciplinary artist, art educator, curator, author, cultural worker and youth advocate born in Athens, Greece. Lives and works between Athens and Brooklyn. Received a BA in Comparative Literature at The Kapodistrian University in Athens Greece and studied art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York where she completed a full term MFA.
My thesis project a monogram with photographs and interviews of Greek Immigrants “The Great Longing: The Greeks of Astoria, Queens”. I taught studio art practices at Cooper Union School of Art in NYC and Cal Arts in Valencia, California and The School of Fine Arts in Athens, Greece. I have lectured and participated in residencies worldwide. I am the co-editor of Organizing from Below/HOW Assemblies Matter? 2017 by Naked Punch (London & New York) for the 6th Biennial of Athens, OMONOIA, 2016; The School of Everything, 2017 in collaboration with Documenta 14, Futura, Athens/Kassel; Perform Interdependency Project, 2017 collaboration between ASFA , Kunsthochschule Kassel and the Arts and Media at Zurich University of Arts.
My recent projects focus on creating artistic initiatives and models that arose in peripheral/non-privileged/geopolitically challenged conditions. HOW Assemblies Matter? (2016) a two-day long rigorous gatherings in the context of the Historic Amphitheaters M.A.X / AVEROF at Athens Polytechnic School for the 5th Athens Biennial. It has been followed by Rehearsing for an Improbable Assembly (2017). I have furthered my artistic interests in radical, self organized and self directed educational models in my most recent project The Garden: All the Fearful and Joyful Things Joining One to the Other (2017 to present). A research-intensive work-in-progress organized in collaboration with The City of Athens and 400 youth from Public High Schools in Attiki, Piraias and Refugee Camps.
